PRK is a time-tested surgical method for permanently correcting refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. If you are tired of relying on glasses or contact lenses to see, you may be the perfect PRK candidate. The best way to find out is by calling board-certified NYC ophthalmologist Dr. Basil Pakeman at 212-308-1566 and scheduling a comprehensive evaluation.

Is PRK Right for Me?

Good candidates for PRK should be:

  • Free of eye disease and disorders including keratoconus and keloids
  • Prepared for a slight recovery period with limited physical activity
  • In generally good health and free of autoimmune disease or immunodeficiency
  • Neither pregnant nor nursing

Good candidates for PRK must also avoid medications including Accutane, Cordorone, Imitrex, and steroids for a period of time leading up to surgery. If you take one of these medications it is important to work with both your prescribing physician and Dr. Pakeman to determine the safest and most effective way to discontinue use.

Because the epithelium is completely removed during PRK, full recovery can take up to one week. Most people are able to return to work within 24 hours, but each case is different. To minimize complications and risks, good candidates for PRK must be able to closely follow all of Dr. Pakeman’s pre and postoperative instructions. These will be covered in greater detail during your laser vision correction consultation at our New York City office.
